09/30/09 - OnLive gets major investment ahead of winter launch - play.tm

The OnLive cloud gaming service this week receives a fresh round of funding, that values the HD gaming platform at over 500 million USD.

Big cheese Steve Perlman hasn't revealed the exact sum but it is believed this is biggest gaming deal of the year, OnLive targeting a winter US release - although it may not arrive this side of Christmas.

"Over the last decade, we've seen an enormous upheaval in the media business as the written word, photos, music, and video have been steadily moving away from physical media to online delivery," Perlman tells his blog.

"One major category that still remains largely based on physical discs is fast-response interactive media - in particular, video games. And, of course, OnLive's goal is to enable that last remaining transition."

It is unclear when OnLive will arrive, then, but it seems the firm does now have the cash to pull off a dramatic debut.

As I recall, onlive was stating earlier that they would be ready for a "Winter 09" release. Now it seems they are speaking of a Winter release. Sounds like it wont launch until 2010 to me.

I am also curious/worried about AT&T funding onlive. Im really hoping AT&T doesn't have much pull with onlive because they annoyed me enough with blocking Slingplayer over 3G on the iphone
