View Full Version : Perhaps I'm just an idiot, but search seems less than helpful to me...

Please bear with me as I'm not a huge forum frequenter, but I do try and read/follow rules as much as possible and obviously one of the big ones is to search before posting. That's fine and grand, but when I do a search, I'm often times simply given a link to the beginning of a 65+ page thread.

I realize this is obviously a function of the forum software, but isn't there an easy way to go directly to the posts that reference your keywords? I really don't want to read an entire 65 page thread just to find that the keywords I entered were referenced separately on pages 3, 18, 42 and 56.

I apologize if I'm being dense, but the functionality is just not very intuitive to me. If it is a simple option I'm over looking, perhaps a sticky somewhere called "How to search for dummies" would be in order.

If it's not an option within the forum software, I do software dev. for a living and am not scared to look into some php code......

There is an option to search directly for the post you're looking for instead of getting the whole thread.

http://onlivefans.com/search.php?search_type=1
(The above link is the "Advanced Search" under the normal search bar.)

The last option in there is to show results by post or by thread.

I hope this helps, welcome to the community and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! =)

Wow, I do feel like an idiot... right in plain sight. Perfect hiding spot. Thanks much for the reply this will help immensely.

Interestingly enough though, the advanced search link does not have the ?search_type=1 parameters for me and does not have the same options (so feeling like less of an idiot now). Using the link you posted works great though, thank you.

Haha, you're right. I just noticed the link changes. The "advanced search" button takes you to the "Search multiple content types" tab, the tab to the left of it changes to the url I linked.

Glad to hear it worked for you!

Yeah, I search for about five minutes before almost every post I create, and almost always get unhelpful results. Although it does lead me to other interesting posts that I may have otherwise missed.

I'll often use google and just put site:onlivefans.com along with the search term so it only searches here.

For example:
ea site:onlivefans.com

Will give these results (http://www.google.com/search?q=steve+perlman+site%3Aonlivefans.com&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#sclient=psy&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=bDR&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&source=hp&q=EA+site:onlivefans.com&pbx=1&oq=EA+site:onlivefans.com&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=6228l6333l2l6942l2l2l0l0l0l0l100l181l1.1l2&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=42924a53861f7c1b&biw=1440&bih=815).

Exactly, plus always use "" to get results with the exact word

BTW: that's great that you search for ea site: onlivefans.com and it gives you steve perlman lol

I am now jealous of such brilliance, haha.

VB search is pretty bad. Anyone know if there is any code to modify it?

Sent from my Atrix 4G bitches!

Don't know much about it, but there's this: http://products.digitalpoint.com/vbulletin-sphinx-search.php

It's got a subscription fee though.
