I hope everyone reading this thread knows what a IRC server is.
Well I'm hoping that OnLiveFans will create a IRC server.
I know about the Web Chatbox. But it is very limiting.

The IRC server could be easily implemented.
1. Setup a IRC Daemon
2. http://i.imgur.com/er8z4.png
3. Make the page where that links to.

For #3 you could use qwebirc for the IRC web client. You could skin it to fit the Orange and Black Design. etc.

A Skype or Ventrilo server would cut it as well. I do want a new, real-time method of communicating with the members here. The chatbox on the front page looks like an after-thought, no offense of course. It's just inconveniently located below everything else.

There's always imVox =).
I know my friend and I use that for our minecraft server.

Well the thing is about all of those is that it's a separate client / service and is not embedded into a webpage which would require people to install additional things which creates friction!
And OnLive Fans administrators would not have complete control over it.

We'd have full control over an imVox server, and one of our staff is the CM/Marketing guy for the company. The only issue I see is that I don't think imVox has a web client.

Not for long...

yet...

To the OP- You really think we need an entire IRC server just for Onlive? I think a single channel would be sufficient on Freenode. I'm sure everyone who actually cares about IRC already has an IRC client. No need for one on the site.

Well personally I prefer a IRC server from OnLivefans. irc.onlivefans.com sounds alot more attractive then irc.freenode.net
You don't need a dedicated computer for IRC Server. A IRC daemon uses very little CPU and RAM. You could run it on the same machine that OnLiveFans use for their webserver
Some people don't know about IRC servers. But they still want a easy way to communicate with many people at the same time.
Also the whole point is to create less friction. A user wouldn't have to download and install a client to just communicate.
I know what some of you are probably thinking. "Just use the forums". Some people just want to chat out ideas, etc. There really isn't a forum for just communicating small talk.
Imagine what would happen if everyone on the forums started creating Threads called "What do you think of ...."

I'm rather unfamiliar with setting a an IRC server and making it web based.

The web based part is completely separate from the actual IRC server. It would be the easiest part of it all. Download qwebirc or any other web client and copy it to the www / htdocs directory and then just need to change the config files. And got a working web client.
As for setting up the server it depends on how the computer is setup. Operating System, etc.
Of course you could just use someone elses IRC server. And make the web based part connect to it.
For example, http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=OnLiveFans
Or you could just embed it somewhere on the forum.
<iframe src="http://webchat.freenode.net/?nick=OnLiveFan...&channels=OnLiveFans&uio=MTE9MzE28" width="647" height="400"></iframe>
I don't want to trouble you with making it. But just give it some thought for the future.

I havent used an irc thing since my first years on the internet and downloading movies.

Chat box is fine to me. You just want a bigger box to chat in or something?

More stuff you want? We don't even use a quarter of all the features already on the site.

I kinda feel the same way with IRC. We have the shout box and the forum. I don't think an IRC section would really be of much benefit. If some of you want to get together and form an OnLiveFans IRC channel, I can implement it into the website if you'd like. I do have plans for a "pseudo" chat feature in the future, but I'm waiting for some improvements in the technology I'd like to use.

It's really not that hard, I ran a server on a small network for a couple of years, The web based client setup is also pretty easy, but most of them cost a little bit of change.

qwebirc costs nothing. And hosting a irc server costs nothing.

I said most clients. Hosting a server does cost money, you would be surprised how much bandwidth even a small one uses.

Hosting a IRC server on a computer you own doesn't cost money.
But I assume that OnLiveFans uses a dedicated company for hosting.
Anyways I guess OnliveFans website can just use someone elses server.
