OnLive now has announced all of their servers. California, Virginia, Dallas, and Alabama, Chicago

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/3460/capturelw.png

EDIT: Updated with regards to new information

EDIT2: I took the map from the Columbia university lecture and perspective corrected and sharpened. Like ryanswo said, it is Atlanta, not Alabama.

The circles aren't exactly circles because the globe is round and the picture of the US is flat. I'm not so sure that 3 locations will be enough. I have a feeling they will end up finding out they need more.

Yeah, it looks like some of Florida might get some crappy service, unless the server is placed lower. I don't exactly know where this server is! Anyone? I can change the map accordingly.

As of right now they only have 2 servers up, at least thats what I remember hearing during the press conference. One on the west coast and one on the east coast. They said for sure before the retail release they will have one up in between the two and maybe more.

I thought that I would bring this thread back to life to ask this question: There are going to be five servers throughout the continental US, where do you think these will be located? I can create a new map according to the consensus of of the community. Anybody with some inside info? LOL.

that sucks because i live in FLORIDA! i bet they will play 5 servers here: east coast, west coast, mid-west, north-west, and south-east,

They should make the server placement reasonable, so everyone in the U.S. can play if they want to...the U.S. is the biggest subscriber to Xbox live...so if Onlive leaves some of the U.S. out...they will be losing some money.

Yea, i heard they said about 5 servers in america by release.

Where abouts in Essex are you from Tyro? I'm from Dagenham, about 20 miles from central London =D If they place a server in the London we'd get awesome service but I think that could cause problems. Maybe 1 server in the midlands with 1000 miles coverage could do the whole of the UK as opposed to London?

I also hope that they get coverage in other parts of the world...because America contains only roughly 8 percent of the world's population.

Basildon - Festival lesuire to be precise. ;)

That we would, still I would guess that the midlands is were it would be placed since it would mean they would get a wider audience compared to just the area nearest to london. :)

Or they would place 3 servers, one in England, one in Scotland and one in ireland.

Alfrayer
04-13-2009, 07:22 PM
Oh awesome, Im not too far from Basildon.
Althought with a 1000 mile coverage, they'd be able to get the whole of UK with one server. Even if it was based in London - however the only trouble is the people in scotland would get a bad service relative to others and a large radius would spill into france etc. and not be used. Like i said with the Midlands, it optmises the radius so that everyone fall within a nice region - they could even have the one server with a radius of about 600 miles, UK isn't very big after all ;)

Well, considering that they have bought OnLive.fr domain name and are planning on expanding this next, I expect a server in France.

I think the logical choice for a server center in the middle of the country would be Denver, there are already some serious server centers here for other things, and it is pretty much centrally located.

I also just want it to be near me.

So they're looking at central California for the west coast server? Seems to make more sense than placing it in Los Angeles as it's one of the corners of the U.S.

They should put servers in major cities. They should also add alot more servers there is no way this is going to work with just those.

I hope the tap into the Asian market. The internet is blazing fast.
I am living in Korea for now and my home get 75MB/s and the PC cafe gets 100MB/s. I think it would just be a wast if they did not. Most online services don't go there. Like steam is trying but it is not doing well. and Xbox is just a joke over here. the best one seems to be Sony. Even better then Nintedo. Korea is all about the fast, powerful stuff. the new shit. It is awesome because I get to like beta test ever new thing ever. From LG and Samsung. I love my new LED TV. XD

It is accurate to my knowledge of current server locations. As of now, nobody really knows where the other 2 servers will be located, but I am sure that the whole US will be covered.

No servers built yet, and no dates on expansion. Although, if OnLive is successful, it will expand to the UK.

Was reading through an old article (from when Onlive was announced) and found out that New York has been confirmed as being a server host.

OnLive's game servers are actually located in one of five planned data centers (ones in Santa Clara and New York are confirmed), so while the service will depend on where you live, coverage will extend across the entire United States (and even technically parts of Canada).

I agree with Aph0ticShield, there is no point having 2 servers so close to each other. They should have 5 servers, 1 in NY, 1 in Florida, 1 in Texas, 1 in Denver, and 1 in Las Vegas or California, that way almost all of Contintental US is covered.

Putting one in Denver and Las Vegas would be stupid and leave the North West (Most importantly Seattle) out of the loop, Cali is a little better I guess but still if Cali and Texas are confirmed no need for Denver it's covered by both of those...

I surely hope that someone made a typo when they said one server would be in Virginia and one in New York. Why now spread the servers out a bit. If I were OnLive, I would do these 5 servers - Cali, Texas, NY, Florida, and Chicago. I believe that would cover everyone. However, maybe I would do Kansas City instead of Chicago.

Revilo62RAWR
08-28-2009, 04:12 AM
But again then Seattle is just covered by CA and not by much... I say Seattle, LA, Miami, New York City and Denver, so then all the corners and the center will have one, it'd cover every where!

XanSteel
09-03-2009, 05:54 PM
If they are going to have five servers, then Florida is only a logical location to have in the mix. There's a dark fiber backbone that runs through Florida. The three logical cities to choose from would be Tampa, Orlando, or Jacksonville. Being that those are the three major IT cities, with Tampa being number one, because BrightHouse (aka Road Runner), Comcast, and Verizon (FIOS) servers come out of Tampa.

Ima have to say that the places they picked for the servers are terrible! North Dakota gets no coverage really....

And they are all so close together.... Hopefully they have a reason why...

keyboardcowb0y
09-24-2009, 02:32 AM
Reason why is most likely load balancing amongst the population. They probably did their research and know there are more gamers in different areas, and they are focusing their initial launch on those areas.
