View Full Version : Please impose signature restrictions
The size of some recent signatures has gotten way out of hand. Not the dimensions (which can be annoying) but the actual size of the file.
Look at this post.

That person's signature is 5 megabytes! Wtf?
To put it in perspective, to view that thread containing the signature on a...
1.5Mbit connection - 50 seconds to download the full page
6Mbit connection - 8 seconds to download the full page
This will also kill people who browse on mobile connections, etc.

I've completely disabled signatures in the options. There's no reason for them really, just a waste of space. If you don't wish to completely disable them, I'd suggest installing adblock into your browser and blocking specific signatures/pictures you do not wish to see. That will at least hold you over until some regulations regarding signature size can be put into place.

I turn off all avatar pics and signatures on all forums I browse. What is the point of them? Does some anime chick as your avatar or an overproduced animated gif as your signature tell me anything about who you are as a person? (Yes, but not what you think it does.)

People do it for entertainment and to express themselves in some cases.
They shouldnt be limited because you dont like it especially when you have the option to turn them off yourself.
I would understand it being a problem if you couldnt actually do anything about it, but you can.
I totally agree some of them go way too far. Ive had a bad time dealing with signatures on Tera's forums where people literally have a signature 3x the size of these reply boxes.

I just like for people to see what Ive created. I don't try to put a over-sized sign. Just to show my little work that took a long time to create.
I think there should be a limit. But it shouldnt be restricted.
Why not put an option button that allow others to not have to see sign. or avatars?

Actually, we have quite a few signature here that are typically the same size if not longer than the posts they leave.
If people enjoy expressing yourself in LARGE format, I suggest they join the appropriate forum for the artist in them, i.e. an imageboard.
There's a reason why people created signature bars...

1. Go to Settings in the top right corner when you're signed in
2. Under the "My Settings" list on the left side choose "General Settings"
3. Scroll down until you see the "Thread Display Options"
4. Uncheck "Show Signatures" (and "Show Avatars" if you want to take it that far)
5. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click "Save Changes"
I've had that on for a couple of months and find my experience on this site to be vastly improved.

Many people replying to this thread are missing the point. The issue is neither the picture size nor the file size, the issue is slow page loading time. This issue arises from two fronts. One being the file size and the other being the poor internet infrastructure within the US of A. Yes, these larger file signatures cause a problem for people with really crappy internet in this country, but so does Onlive. Think about it.

I'm sorry if I was unclear. I'll give it another try.
Issue: slow loading time for pages
Contributing Factors or Causes: large signature files, subpar internet speeds
If your internet speeds can handle Onlive but have difficulty dealing with these signatures. Then Onlive's algorithm is better than I thought.

For me the size of the signature does not effect the loading time usually.

@KicknGuitar if you guys ever get fed up with it the change is an easy one but has to be made by an admin. Width, height, size, animated or not, iirc.
If your internet speeds can handle Onlive but have difficulty dealing with these signatures. Then Onlive's algorithm is better than I thought.
That takes the assumption that everyone browses this forum from the same connection they play OnLive from, which isn't always the case. Some people browse the forum on phones that don't have tapatalk, some people from work with slow connections.
There's also no sense in not optimizing a sig for the web. That 80k image in yours can easily be taken down in filesize without a noticeable degradation, even by photoshop bumpkins like me. As example this took a couple minutes and it's half the size.
http://i55.tinypic.com/o8zcbn.jpg
Images like this aren't as big a deal. Those 5MB animated gif sigs that the OP was talking about are impractical and silly. It isn't necessarily end-user as vB doesn't always handle loading big images very well. Plus the forum is set to fluid, so wide images can look strange depending on the user browser width. Lots of factors.

I've been fed up (as you can read my comments on the matter here). Just not many people care for it so there hasn't really been any overruling action on the matter.
Thom0, the full spectrum of the complaint is being missed even by you.
People are coming to the forum to read.
If they want to see beautiful editing skills they'll click on a folio link or go visit folio related communities.
How this relates to our forum,
Large file sizes equal poor loading times.
Large image dimensions equal poor visibility on the screen.
All of these issues can re fixed by setting signature limits via the site's system.
What isn't helpful:
Blocking every image a user may dislike. As soon as a user posts a new image that falls into the "Large" formats, it must be blocked again.
Turning off signatures. If a user doesn't want to see any signatures they can easily turn them off, but if a user only has a issue with 1 out of every ten signatures clearly they don't mind a mindful signature appropriately designed.

I agree with the quoted portion of this post. I don't mind signatures at all, so as long as they're text only. I don't like images in signatures period, however. You have an avatar already.

Just to clarify my stance:
I don't find value in signatures, generally. With avatars, you can easily identify a poster. But on this forum, signatures can be helpful. For example, listing your OnLive tag, current multiplayer games being played. Signatures on this forum can help foster the community.
We don't need images in signatures to do that. How do images help? Now, if I can't convince the admins here to disable image signatures completely, can you guys at least impose some reasonable limits on them? That way, I can still read a thread and not be annoyed by a person's signature. It is a pain to read threads on an iPad. Has anyone here other than me looked at this forum on an iPad? Sometimes, I'll just ignore the forum entirely just because it can be such a pain.
Keep in mind the continually growing tablet community when thinking about the future direction of this forum. OnLive sees their service as a huge boon to tablet gaming. Why would OnLive Fans want to handicap themselves to that particular community?
I shouldn't have to disable signatures on the forum as a solution. That is a disingenuous "solution."

so what if people want to post images of their games, i have no complaint at all and i actually like the fact that Thom0 put images of his games for his signatures, they arent too big to be annoying, or too small to not be able to read, its lets us all know what games he has and increases the chance of people wanting to play the multiplayer games he has with him
^^Exactly.

We're not talking about signatures like yours. We're talking about sigs that have a speed test stacked on top of a ping test stacked on top of 2 animated gifs stacked onto a text (or image) list of games. People can fit everything they need to within a 200~ pixel height.

It's not selfish, it's a fact.
MOST of the internet is designed for, at minimum, 900 pixels of viewing width. A large percentage for 1280 pixels of viewing width, minimum. Vbulletin isn't designed with netbooks and tablets in mind.
Width isn't my only complaint.
And once again, vbulletin might not be designed with netbooks and tablets in mind, but you have to recognize the purpose of this forum. If it were a netbook or tablet forum, shouldn't that forum recognize its crowd? Further, OnLive is targeting that particular market. As such, shouldn't this forum do what it can to make the forum as satisfactory as possible for that crowd?
All of the sigs on the forum are reasonable except for those of glow and esquire.
Your signature is only a few pixels away from being as wide as mine.

The reason people have Pingtest and Speedtest results in their sig is for easy reference to others when troubleshooting problems in the tech board.
^^Exactly.
You have since removed one of your images that was on top, however you could just as easily set the two you have now side by side instead of stacking them for no reason... It's just needless space being used.

If you could actually held a serious and respectful discussion on the subject you might actually see both sides of the picture.
The point of the amplification is to exaggerate and show how not everyone has the same tastes as you and to show how easily this issue has reoccured where a admin had to request a user to edit their sig.
A mod can solve a lot of these issues, restricting characters, image counts, line counts, possibly image file size and maybe more.
This also indirectly forces the user to not post an image so carelessly in their signature since now they must turn on their spacial awareness for fitting all they want into a limited space.
Supporting a Mod will still allow signatures to be viewed, and will only increase creativity.

so true. why not pm the admin, wait until he replies, and if he hasnt in a few days, try again until you get a response from him, but dont harass him. and wait until you get a final response from him. not everyone will be pleased with any one decision. i dont have a widescreen monitor, i have the benefit of viewing forums and pages better, but i have a disadvantage when it comes to widescreen viewing, and people with a widescreen monitor, laptop, netbook, etc. have the reverse. i dont go around the forum complaining about onlive on how there's black bars on the top and bottom of most the games

This.
This sort of behavior would be ban-worthy on some boards I visit. There's nothing respectful and mature about posting the very thing you are demanding be taken down when nobody else on this board has anything even REMOTELY close to it. AT the very least everyone has a personal interest or something related to the service or themselves in their sig. Yours are just large files and an eyesore that cause even more problems for people who may be suffering from the same problem as yourselves.
