I'm counting on Tibbon for this one, because I think he owns a physical copy of every game ever made ;)
(Why: Having internet problems, so no onlive access at the moment, and I don't have a video card either.)
(In the interest of contributing something instead of just asking for things, here are some of my favorite forgotten games from this era:
Gothic 2 Gold, an rpg
SiN, an fps
Star Trek Elite Force, an fps
Clive Barker's Undying, an unusual fps
Evolva, a cross-genre 3rd person shooter)

I play Undying pretty regularly. I liked the FIRST Painkiller as well. You should also get Alice.

ALICE!! FABLE 1!! THOSE ARE PERFECT!! I'm kind of surprised I didn't think of those. I was really excited about both of them when they were released back in the day, but I've never played them.
Thanks guys :D
EDIT: i loved the first painkiller, too

Psychonauts!!!
Actually, that era was my hey-day pretty much when it came to games. Let me get you a list of stuff on my Hard drive. I think I pretty much had all the classics.

I actually did something similar for a friend of mine a few days ago. NIKO made a great list, but you can also check The 101 Best PC Games Ever (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/163783/features/the-101-best-pc-games-ever-part-one/).
I love the Baldur's Gate games, and Icewind Dale. I highly recommend them, as Baldur's Gate II is my favorite RPG of all time. :)

I'm surprised no one mentioned 2 of the most epic FPS games during the late 90s..Unreal Tournament 1999, and 007 Goldeneye for the N64.

That's about the best I can recommend. Also Planescape.

I was looking everywhere for a thread such as this. I would love to see Freelancer on here. Also, any of Egosoft's X series: X Tension, X Btf, etc. etc. There aren't really any good space action games. I tried Star Wolves; I am not a fan of strategy games. I just cannot get the hang of selecting objects, and then selecting the place I want them to go, then selecting the task. LOL! I just want to fly my ship, shoot down enemies, loot their cargo, blah, blah, blah. Is there any hope of seeing a good space combat type game?

I was hooked on The Settlers I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Settlers_(video_game)) & II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Settlers_II) and The Clue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Clue!). Both are pretty fun strategy games, but were released a few years before your time window.
