Have you guys heard of this game? It's pretty much a shooter in an MMO world, coming from ex-WoW and ex-Tribes developers.

It's a massive, open world where everyone is playing out in the open together, but a shooter. To me, it's kind of what Borderlands could have been. It is still in development, and they're taking beta sign ups, with expectations to be released towards the end of 2011.

Yeah, micro-transactions are the plan, but they say they're making a large effort to make sure the items are desirable, but not game changing or advantageous.

Unfortunately there's lots of money to be made via micro-transactions, and companies are setting up entire business models around it (MMO sites are a good example) so it may be here to stay... I'm not a fan of them either...

I played the Korean Beta for Huxley, was pretty fantastic and a lot of fun. Then it came over here, ijji bought the rights, and it was basically condensed down to just Unreal Tournament. Thus Webzen wanted the rights back, because ijji had essentially ruined the entire experience.

If you read the FAQs in the official Firefall website, they mention they are going to attempt to have Firefall work with minimum system requirements, and have the game working on running on as many systems as possible.

I have been watching this game with anticapation however the biggest detract for this game for me is the micro transaction, I'd rather stick with a monthly fee instead of dropping here n there a few bucks for gears n quests and what have you.. Though as a whole this would be a fun game as is for onlive lol hell we can have our own onlive merc team up n running in know time haha specially since the game is free after all... more multiplayer games and as long as yer network is descent lag free!

The third-person shooter Firefall has questioned nearly everything about what it means to be an MMO. In fact, CEO Mark Kern has mentioned to us at PAX East 2011 that the term MMO is not in the development vocabulary of his game: "If people want to call us an MMO, that's great. We aren't going to call ourselves an MMO, because we want you to think fresh thoughts along with us." These "fresh thoughts" extend not only to the game design, but they also extend to the game's subscription model.

As a former team lead from Blizzard, one would think that Kern would totally support the monthly subscription model shared by Blizzard's flagship MMO, World of Warcraft. In the beginning, Kern admits that he was. He tells to the Escapist, "We felt that with a AAA quality game, a subscription was still the way to go. I was pretty skeptical of free-to-play five years ago."

However, with the change in US economy and watching the success of F2P MMOs in other countries like China, the CEO changed his tune. "What I found surprised me; free-to-play wasn't just a successful model, it was an incredibly profitable one," Kern explains in the Escapist article. As the perception of F2P is changing in western culture, perhaps we will see more and more triple-A games beginning their life as free-to-play.

It seems Red 5 Studio’s CEO Mark Kern finally spilled the beans on when Firefall would be released. In an interview conducted at this year’s ChinaJoy convention Mark told Tencent Games that Firefall would be launching in December in North America.

Some confusion followed as Tencent Games though he meant beta would being in Dec, but over the weekend on the Firefall forums it was confirmed that Firefall would be launching and not entering beta in Dec. So that means we should see closed and open beta being announced soon.

Red 5 Studios boss considers his game launched, and plans to open Firefall to increasingly larger waves going forward.

Mark Kern has been around successful MMOs for years. His time with Blizzard on producing Diablo and World of Warcraft has certainly informed every decision he makes at the studio he helped found in 2005. When Firefall was first unveiled at PAX Prime last year, he mentioned that the game would be ready by the end of 2011. That's why Kern was surprised when the media grew interested in comments he made in China that Firefall was still set to release in December. Perhaps his confusion is derived from the fact that Kern already considers his free to play shooter MMO already launched. Firefall is in Friends & Family beta right now, meaning that a small select group of people are already playing it - with a strict NDA, I'd imagine.

"We already consider ourselves 'launched.' We will not have a traditional beta, open beta, launch process," Kern told The Escapist Magazine. "We no longer feel this [cycle] makes sense in a modern, online, service-oriented business, especially a free to play game. Instead, we have modeled our launch after Gmail's invite system."

If you remember from way back in 2004, Google's mail service was rolled out very slowly with members only allowed a small number of invites that refreshed over time and Red 5 will emulate that concept with the Firefall beta.

"The way this works is that we bring testers and content up in layers," Kern said. "As each layer proves itself out, we give our testers invite slots, which they are free to send to their fellow gamers. We use different criteria to decide when and to whom we release more invite slots."

Invites will continue to be released slowly this way until the game is officially open to anyone who wants to download it come December 2011. "This process never stops, as it didn't stop for Gmail for a very long time. It's a great way to grow the game through people's social networks, which is what we want for our team and clan-oriented game."

This kind of system works because the content for the game is already in various stages of completion. Mark's comments about precentages was taken out of context and he's confident that there's more than enough available for the testers and for the launch final release in December.

"Game development has many parallel tracks, and some are harder than others. Our custom 3D engine and server engine, for example, is 90% complete. Our terrain and art and towns for December are also at 80% as is the art for NPCs, monsters, mobs, etc," he said. "We are a free to play game and we have a different go-to-market strategy than retail games. Just like League of Legends, we start with a great gameplay experience, get that right, and then the content will flow."

They're giving some good info in these vids. PvE progression will allow you to advance your Army's (guild's) tech for newer weapons, vehicles, and things like mortar strikes. That's pretty badass.

I can not disclose what times the beta tests are taking place, nor what the minimum system requirements are. If you'd like to post or PM me the following information, I'll verify if you qualify so you can be considered.

Firefall developer Red 5 Studios has notified Shacknews that it will shut down its upcoming title's beta and website for 24 hours beginning January 18 in protest of the 'Stop Online Piracy Act' (SOPA).

Calling SOPA "misguided legislation," Red 5 Studios CEO Mark Kern said the proposed bill would hurt smaller game companies, "who will not have the legal resources or lobbying presence to protect themselves from unwarranted shutdown."


"We are extremely disappointed in this misguided legislation. We are also ashamed of the ESA for supporting a bill which is clearly not in the best interests of gamers or the game industry," Kern added.

The Entertainment Software Association recently came out in support of the bill, and by association with the group, a laundry list of major game companies are standing behind it as well. While some ESA members have spoken out against the bill, none have canceled their membership.

"No we are not, and now we never will be," Kern told me when asked if Red 5 Studios supported The ESA.

When asked if Red 5 Studios would appear at future E3 events considering the company's position against the ESA, CEO Mark Kern said: "No, we will not attend E3 unless ESA reverses their stance."

[Update: 7:35pm PT] "I just had my staff cancel our E3 plans," Kern added in a follow-up email.

Red 5 Studios is joining Reddit in protest of SOPA by going dark on January 18. We will be taking down our website, community site and Firefall beta for 24 hours on the 18th.
