It wasn't so much illegal and it was again the TOS for reverse engineering the software. It would void your warranty I know that for sure. However, it isn't like you couldn't undo the jailbreak and set it back to Apple settings.

I'm unclear on the DVD thing since educational stuff it typically covered anyways. Most shows say you can copy them but you have to erase/destroy the copy within so long.

I think the DVD ruling is quite unclear. It basically just states that you can only use small parts of copyrighted material, but you should really try to get it elsewhere if you can. University professors are exempt (as they have been for the past few years).

As for the jail breaking decision, I think it is a step in the right direction for the open web. It shouldn't be illegal to be curious. If you can replace your car motor with another brand other than the OEM motor, then why shouldn't you be able to do the same thing with the iPhone? You already gave Apple your money.
