New Video Game System Threatens Sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox

Categories Internet, News
OnLive is attempting to make a run at the video game industry with a service that will allow people to play online streaming video games, which will still allow gamers to play popular console games without actually needing to purchase the games or the expensive console.

OnLive is essentially similar to a cable box... you'd subscribe to the service, get your little black box and hook it up to your television. Once you plug in your Internet connection... you're good to go.

This sounds like a great idea but it will spark a war within the video game industry that will force Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft to start using additional CD keys, create new user agreements or make new systems that can compete with OnLive.

I don't picture any of these companies rushing to pump out new systems... instead they will amend licenses and agreements so that it will block OnLive from being allowed to stream games to hundreds, thousands or millions of other people.

I think OnLive forgets that the majority of game sales go to compensate companies for the cost of paying people to develop new games. Without the revenue from game sales... companies wouldn't be taking the time to pay people to create the games because people wouldn't be buying the games. The other solution for this type of market (down the road) would be to charge a high priced flat rate for giving OnLive the right to stream the games.

The last hurdle... is that OnLive is completely dependent on an Internet connection. I recall several months back there was a few news articles about Internet Service Providers considering charging customers based on their Internet usage or placing a block so that people could only consume a certain amount of bandwidth.

If Internet companies began limiting Internet usage... people wouldn't be downloading very many songs, videos, movies or games because they would eat up the bandwidth and no one wants to pay thousands of dollars for their Internet connection.

A move like this from ISP's would put OnLive out of business as well as hurt all the other companies like Mythic Entertainment and Blizzard Entertainment that release online games like World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online or Dark Age of Camelot.

The service is a wonderful idea... but there is going to be a MAJOR war over it. No matter what, OnLivewill change the video game industry. Hopefully OnLive changes the industry for the better but it could eventually change it for the worse.

He thinks you get games for free once you subscribe to the service ^_^ Someone hasn't done their research.
