Say bye-bye to your console and hello to on-demand HD games piped straight to your TV

We blame Spotify. The runaway success of the online music service shows you don't need to own entertainment to enjoy it - 'streaming' music from a distant server really doesn't feel any different to having the MP3 on your PC.
But music is one thing - surely streaming hi-def games such as Crysis: Warhead (below) is different?

Not so, says OnLive, a company with a technology that allows you to enjoy the latest titles on your TV without a console.

The games actually play on a hi-tech server far away, and you simply stream video and control characters via the web.

More from Rob Waugh...

There are no discs, no big downloads, and you can start playing any game instantly.

If OnLive works, it could spell the end of the console market.
Big-name studios and games such as Crysis and Tomb Raider have already signed up.

OnLive streams the video to your TV through a desktop box and controller, or works with a PC or Mac, with no box.

To play in hi-def you'll need a 5Mbps connection. For standard definition, you only need 1.5Mbps.

Prices - and a European release date - haven't yet been set, but OnLive will hit the US by winter 2009.
