A member brough this up in a previous thread, admins are talking about it. So I'm offering up a poll. Based on the results we will discuss it further.

Now, this is not saying exactly what we will do but we will do something creative depending on our final decision.

I vote that you host that image of that chick with the rack on a different host so I gave in glory at those instead of photobucket crap, lol. Also, voted yes.

What's the point of all the websites doing this? Is it to show everyone what could possibly happen if SOPA passes?

That's pretty much it. It is more or less demonstrating what the net would look like locked down. That includes some of the biggest websites out there. Some of the most profitable. As well as some of the biggest commerce sites could even be affected.

Oh, in that case, I'm all for it.

I think we should have some sort of landing page that explains why the site is down, though. Maybe a picture of a big SOPApilla and a message about how shitty the bill is.

Warren
01-14-2012, 10:49 PM
Yeah, as long as there is a landing page with info about the bill, telling people to contact their congress person, I'm all for it!

Although I am against SOPA's powers granted to IP holders, there are certain parts I support, like the illegal pharmaceutical ban. We need a new law for the Internet age for intellectual property protection

I don't know why it would matter if such a small forum blacked out, so I voted no. I could go a day without OLF, but I just don't see the point.

Warren
01-15-2012, 12:35 AM
Because there are a lot of people who view this site and aren't registered. Due to the popularity of the Desktop App and the type of crowd it may draw, there's a decent chance that someone who isn't aware of what SOPA is would see it. Every little bit helps, right?

Tell that to the strikers and the progressives of the Women's Movement. Tell that to those who fought and still fight for civil rights. Tell that to Dr. King.

There's more than SOPA. That reaction is exactly what proponents want you to have, just leave it to the side and no one will care as the next bill is pasted.

Regulars or not I'll repeat myself. Telling that it doesn't matter to the strikers and the progressives of the Women's Movement; Telling that to those who fought and still fight for civil rights, Telling that us few can't help anything to Dr. King and maybe this can shine some light on how the US Government works, how movements work and how groups of people under a common goal can and do achieve their objectives. It is through the many not just the numbers of who are affected directly.

If every town during the 60's thought they were too small and unimportant we would not have the powerful civil rights movement we know of. It is through every member not just the 1% with all the power.

SOPA is only postponed it is not dead! This is even more reason to go dark to make sure people are properly informed that it still is a threat.

How many of you registered on these forums that are saying we're not big enough to make a difference had heard of SOPA before we started talking about it here? If there's even one of you out there that hadn't, then going dark is worth it.

For every one person that has an account here, there are at least 3 or so people who don't have accounts but still browse these forums. There's plenty of chance that they may not know about what's going on. Especially if they don't visit sites like Reddit like a lot of us do.

And since we've mentioned Reddit, here's a great post (http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/oixy1/sopa_was_just_shelved_now_to_defeat_pipa/c3hnzq3) about it:

This is an old trick. Please spread the word and call them out repeatedly.
1: Make crazy offer (SOPA)
2: Client rejects crazy offer (us)
3: Make a "reasonable" offer (PIPA)
4: Client accepts offer because it seems reasonable compared to crazy offer.

Don't let up.

Ask onlive to close its servers for one day... kinda pointless cause its only barely 1mil effected but would have a bigger meaning and impact rather than a Fansite forum.. come on...

I'd love to have OnLive shut down for a day, especially with all the attention they've got over the Desktop app. I even tried to bring it up with MJ the other day in the QA he had, to find out OnLive's stance on it. I think he missed it though.

The Firefall beta it shutting down that day, and there are only a few hundred of us in that, you don't see them saying "Oh, our numbers are too small to make a difference." Every little bit counts.

I think it's a great idea aswell.
If they shut down the us side, would the uk servers be able to stay up?

I think the problem with OnLive doing it would be the fact that people who have spent money on their games wouldn't be able to access the stuff they've paid for. I don't see that as being a good move.

All the more reason for the fansite to shut down. Firefall can do it because the game is free. I think shutting down a service that people spend money on would backfire. If they took down their website though, just left the game service running, that could work.

MinistryOvWar

Its a pointless move one way or another. Its the Devs and Publishers who can make a real impact on the matter. not a fansite about cloud gaming.

Yeah I can definatly see it backfiring.

However

it is a harsh way of showing what could happen if it went through, and they decided to block onlive.
It would piss so many people off that they can't access games they paid for, and then they come here to say something about it, and realize that even this site is down.

It would be a good way to say "hey! This could happen." in my honest opinion, but I can see it changing the way people look at the service, and not be too happy.

I'm just going to agree to disagree with you Ministry, especially since you're in the UK. Our country is going through some shit right now and more and more people are starting to speak out against certain things, the #Occupy movement, for example. I used to never talk about politics and rarely paid attention to all that stuff, but when they start fucking with the internet, that's where I draw the line! lol

If I wasn't a Redditor, I'd have never known about SOPA. Perhaps since you are in the UK, you'll know how the masses in this country only seem to pay attention to movie stars and pop culture. Not even my friends on Facebook are talking about it. The more sites that start showing their opposition, the more people will become aware of what is going on.

And yes, it is the publishers that can make a difference, but its up the people to tell the publishers to take a stand against it. How are those people going to push publishers and developers to take a stand if they don't know about it? That's why the fans sites also need to step up and participate. It's a long chain and begins with the regular people.

A fan site going dark isn't an attempt to show the big boys that we're in too. The industry will just say "OnLivefans what? Who are they?"

It is about making sure regular, every-day John Smith and Joe Schmoe knows that this is serious and needs to be kept an eye on. Making him aware will lead him to contact the major publishers and his congress person to make sure their opinion on the matter is heard.

Going dark is about helping spread awareness.

This is exactly why such a small site should participate. It's to show that this website is in jeopardy and could be shut down without warning if these thigns pass. Hopefully it will make people realize this affects even us little, small fan sites.

A cloud gaming fansite of 11,190 users as of this post.
That is a ALOT of people, and a lot of people with a lot of influence.

Trust me...not everyone that comes here is your average gamer. We have people of all pay grades, walks of life, and interests coming to this site on a constant basis.
One person can make a difference, multiply that by the power of 11,000(not counting the potential of several thousands or more that are not registered).

Again, this thought process is flawed. Individuals don't matter until they come together. Look at my earlier posts mentioning other protests which defeated money and bad politics.

Also, SOPA is delayed but PIPA will be presented on tuesday as scheduled in the house of rep.

en.Wikipedia.org has also signed on to join the protest, more here: http://motherjones.com/politics/2012/01/how-sopa-protect-ip-and-big-content-lost (http://motherjones.com/politics/2012/01/how-sopa-protect-ip-and-big-content-lost).

Google Joins SOPA/PIPA Protest. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/17/google-joins-online-sopa-protest_n_1210990.html)

WASHINGTON -- Google will join thousands of tech activists, entrepreneurs and corporations on Wednesday in protesting the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act, a controversial bill that has generated national outrage among Internet experts.

On Wednesday, more than 7,000 websites are expected to voluntarily "go dark," by blocking access to their content to protest the bill, according to organizers of SOPAStrike.com. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to bring the measure to a vote next week. Some of the biggest names on the Internet plan to participate in the blackout, including Wikipedia, Mozilla, Reddit and WordPress. On Tuesday, Google stopped short of vowing to take down its popular search engine, but said it would change its home page to show solidarity with protesters.
