When I play online with my xbox theres only a few players at a time, sometimes as few as 8 maximum. With onlives server all in the same place we should get many more players at once.

Even compared to pc games at the moment having the backend hardware in the same place should eliminate traditional online lag in multiplayer.

I think they could have better online play than the xbox and pcs not using dedicated servers. Some games could even have hundreds of players, although there would have to be new games/maps for that many players.

Will onlive have dedicated servers or have one of the backend game servers act as host?

As long as everyone has a decent connection, then there shouldn't be any issues. The problem with having that many players in a game (that isn't an MMO) is making sure that they all have a decent connection.

Even if someone didn't have a decent connection, it should still run fine. This is because the lag would be between the user and his own personal high end pc, but the pc would still be connected to everybody fine. So from how they are saying there technology is working, if someone had a crap connection, on your screen, it would just look like they would move and then stop, maybe at different speeds, but it wouldn't affect anyone else at all. This is all theortical, becuase nobody knows a whole lot about the service, but think about it, all the processing and stuff is going on in the servers, all it gets from the user is where the in-game character should be moving and shooting.

So with that, if a developer decides to take adavatnge of it, we could definatly have huge multiplayer games going on.

Alot of people make good points about this technology but we don't actually know how it works on a litral level. Servers run nice but the only online we've seen in Crysis Wars. Who knows, the time it takes to communicate between the OnLive servers may be too long and may cause lag. I'm not saying it will, just saying alot of questions can't really be answered as no one here has worked with the hardware.

From what I understand with this technology it seems to me that only the one lagging would really be affected as opposed to everyone. I would be surprised if there wasn't games that supported 10+ player multiplayer onlive.

I can't wait to play Age of Empires 3 without all that lag. :)

With MMO's I can see some real cloud gaming. For instance, the 3D world only has to be processed by one server for everyone, then your GPU would probably just derive your current location from that data. I see much more efficiency, in terms of processor power, coming on.

It could open up quite well, considering the system links to a main servr were everyone is located. This way it would be more like a lan party all connected to each other, the only lag recieved would be from the actual transition of frames from the user and the cloud server itself.

From past experiences with mass multiplayer games, the problem isn't getting 10+ people to play without lag, it's getting 10+ people to play the game right and not cheating or disrupting the game.

"Cheating" is thrown around too loosely, and in most cases extremely subjective. Since the World of Warcraft boom almost every kid using the internet now is under the impression that a talented player is 'cheating' in some way, shape or form. Anyhow, we're getting off the topic of this thread. To make this somehow relevant to the actual topic here: we'll definitely see a decrease the conventional teleport and speed hacks seen on many MMOs.

From my understanding it would as if we were all playing on a LAN. Whether OnLive has servers that are expected to handle MMO levels of multi-playing, I'm not sure. If they do support MMOs, client-side latency issues shouldn't have the impact we see today with low ping users in MMOs. Their character will simply stop moving, until their latest input is received - rather than jumping around the screen like we sometimes see when encounter low-latency players.

I can imagine mass raids if WoW were ever to make it Onlive, the massive wars and the massive clans. I'm salivating just thinking about it. :D

I don't see any hindering for even very large scale multyplayer. If everyplayer in the game is rendered on the same server and that server linear scalable then there isn't really anything stopping onlive from thousands of players in a game at once. Especially now with swarm technologies it wouldn't really be a problem. I just don't know how fun that would be....

Mag is necessarily an MMO, it's more like 32 players put in frontlines fuel of war levels and then places 8 or so of them around one area, you will never fight against more than 16 enemies so therefore it really isn't an MMO.

It's one giant battlefield, so seeing 256 players at the same place probably wont happen - but that doesn't mean it can't!

That basically seems like the Battlefield series on the PC, specifically Battlefield 2. Even the menu music is similar xD MAG seems a tad bit prettier though :P
