Check this out. There have been rumors of Sony making a cloud video gaming system similar to Onlive. They registered the trademark "PS Cloud". I decided to do a domain name search for PlaystationCloud.com, because Sony's system would probably be called the Playstation Cloud. This is what I found to my amazement.

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net

The domain was purchased on December 10th 2008 by Sony. Looks like it's pretty much official now. Playstation Cloud will be the name of the new system they lauch (probably a service that is totally online). The reason they registered the trademark "PS Cloud" but not "Playstation Cloud" is simply because "Playstation" is already a trademark.

This is some big news!!!

I wouldn't be suprised because if Onlive is the only company/console doing this they will take over the gaming world, sales will drop on major consoles such as Wii, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. It is in their best interest to find something to compete with this or they WILL loose money and customers.

Wow this would be really bad for OnLive to be competing against Sony. Sony would have almost all the tiitles of OnLive plus more and imagine buying all those many games for OnLive.... then a year later sony comes out with similar technology thats mostly likely 3 times better and fixes the downsides that OnLive has (relying on server).

I still believe this is scare tactics. If not, well then they can enjoy the 2 - 3 year wait to be able to create their system.

The phrase, "Get em while their young" comes to mind when it comes to cloud gaming. The interest is NOW. If you give the people what they want, they will follow your system and you will gain a fan/user base. Wait and you are fighting an uphill battle to get new users as well as sway current users of another console to join yours.

He is exactly right, if you are the original console with the technology you come out first and when you come out first people will buy your console not the one immitating. So that means that people will not change because they are already getting the same thing with onlive why change? Plus onlive doesn't need to have a new chip every 5 years making it am affordable console (no onlive 2 to buy).

Honestly, I could go right now and patent the all new "Niko Cloud" gaming system and register http://www.nikocloud.com just to have nothing come out of it. At the same time, Onlive and Sony could think their is a new player in the market. See where I'm going with that?

Yeah, I agree with Niko, they are just "threatening" OnLive. Their trying to make everyone think they are competing with OnLive, when they could have actually just dismissed the idea as stupid and they are simply marking their territory.

Agreed, its the exact reason microsoft did so well on 360. They launched so early people had not choice, they went with the only soruce for new entertainment. When PS3 came out, very few switched. So yea, I pin this down to scare tactics also.

Concerning Sony and Cloud.

"An idealistic solution to the widely publicized PSN bandwidth fees problem. PlayStation 3 game hosting responsibilities could be split up or the PS Cloud could lead to a cloud console like On Live where games are stored and rendered on far away servers. The PSP already has remote play connectivity with the PS3. Looking (and dreaming) one step forward it would be awesome if Sony the PS Cloud was used to stream music, movies, and technologically impossible games to the PSP by just sending a video stream and transferring button input online."

Its something I am sure they are considering doing and it sounds to me like they may even use their existing systems as a means of getting a larger consumer base.
Even if they were able to set up a cloud system it would still be a long time before they could ever implement it.

OnLive looks like its got a firm grasp on the market.

Caligatrox, could you please provide a link or specific source for your quote from Sony?

Thank you. :)

Here are the links involving sony and cloud gaming.

Looking more closely they're not specific quotes from Sony. I'll edit my post accordingly.

Well I came across some breaking news about the Playstation Cloud service. Here is a quote I got from http://www.psxextreme.com

"Someone from SCEA consumer services told me something interesting. I recently called Sony's consumer services to complain to them about the lack of features, hoping they would forward it to the right people. The guy I talked to was like he had no idea if they are getting those features however he said that he has an orientation sometime next week for a new service with new features called PlayStation Cloud, he said that all he knows about it is what his manager had told him and that was that it will be something similar to FaceBook where you'll have a News Feed thing that will say all the things you've done or friends have done on PlayStation Network like your friend just played this and unlocked this trophy, changed his avatar or reached this level. He also said that there might be a lot of more public features because his manager told him that SCEA Corporate told his manager that they are looking for people within consumer services to become moderators for some of the features that will be in PlayStation Cloud. He said his manager doesn't know much about it, just that Sony wants to make PlayStation Network become more social."

It appears as though the Playstation cloud will not be a competitor to Onlive, but rather a social network like service like facebook for people in the playstation network.

BOO! I really would want OnLive to have a viable competitor. It would pressure companies to lower prices. Capitalism, my friend. Competition is what it is about.

Maybe Playstation Cloud will be integrated into the PS3 with the 3.0 firmware update since that's supposed to be a big revamp of the PS3 and its OS.
